Going Solo

I  had a discussion with a friend last weekend. She just got back from her first ever solo trip to Hong Kong. She said she did not like it. Not the Hong Kong bit – she loves Hong Kong alright but she told me that solo trip is not for her.

To the contrary, I love traveling solo.

I was forced to travel solo when I left Indonesia to study. I flew by myself from Jakarta to London and then took a bus ride to Bournemouth. It was my first time traveling by myself. As much as I was so nervous, I remember feeling very excited. Not only because I was about to start a new life as a student, but also because of everything that I saw during my journey.

Since then, I grew a liking for traveling solo. During my days in the UK, I used to go on weekend/day trips to London or nearby cities from Bournemouth. Nothing too far or too challenging, I know. But I always enjoyed it.

When I’m back in Indonesia, I started traveling solo with a weekend break to Singapore in 2011. I still played it safe though – Singapore is not new for me and it’s easy to get around. Then in 2012 I travelled to Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City by myself. It was quite challenging for my standard because I don’t speak the language and they don’t use English as an official language. Long story short, the trip was successful and even though I don’t really like the city, the trip reaffirmed my love for traveling solo.

One of the perks of traveling solo is to get photobomb-ed by a tourist couple! :p This was taken in Taipei, btw.

Ever since, I try to travel solo at least once a year.  Here’s why:
1. It’s the time for me to enjoy myself. I can have tons of things in my itinerary or not having any. Everything is up to me 🙂
2. I like the feeling of being challenged.. hahaha. I feel good knowing that I am able to overcome a problem by myself 😀
3. I love to meet new people and see new things! And funny enough, I love the feeling of “getting lost in the crowd”.

One thing though, I prefer the city when I’m on my own. I don’t think I would enjoy traveling solo to a beach or mountain destination.. to me those kind of places are best travelled with companion. Oh, and another thing, I haven’t travelled solo in Indonesia! 😐

So that’s me. What about you? Do you like traveling solo?

Now, as I am building my travel plans for this year.. where do you think I should go next? Please note that I have limited leave days and budget this year so I think somewhere in Indonesia will be perfect! 😉

  1. Traveling solo is my preference, as I find it fits me best. And like you, I haven’t traveled solo in Indonesia, as I feel insecure about that. It makes me sad actually, how I’m scared to travel alone in my own country. But I just don’t feel good going around and exploring new places in Indonesia just by myself 😦

    1. I get what your saying Dixie.. I’m feeling exactly the same!

  2. I like travelling solo too. Done it twice since I’m married (not counting going back home to Jkt tho) first NYC second HK & Macao. As for me, solo travelling is my me-time from my duty as a mother and wife, where I can enjoy myself without nagging hubby and kids😜

    Jogjakarta perhaps?

    1. Ahh I remember reading your blog on your NYC trip Ria 🙂
Jogjakarta sounds like a feasible destination, have been there before so I guess it’s just the right challenge as a first timer traveling solo in Indonesia 😀

  4. been there done that, travel solo will make us completely different person than we were before. But when I traveled solo, sadly monopod(tongsis) hadn’t been invented. So the quality of my pictures depends on a complete stranger 😀

    1. Hehehe I tried using tongsis when I went solo traveling in 2014 but after several takes, I didnt like it. I think I wasn’t pro in using it and afterwards decided to ask the help of complete strangers too.. the old way :p

  7. I liked going solo when I lived in Europe, I guess it’s because the cities are mostly easy to get to and transportation is never a huge challenge. Not tried doing solo in Asia, except Singapore. But I always like having a companion, but not too much companions either haha, if you know what I mean.

  8. Waini.

Emang sih Ta, traveling solo is not for a faint heart 😉

    1. Cimaja ada apaa? Surfinf kah?

Petualangan banget deh, berbagai moda transportasi 🙂

  11. Waduh gw gak bisa dah travel solo kecuali kalo buat business trip ya karena terpaksa. Hahaha. Gw pergi ke bioskop sendiri aja males apalagi pergi libur sendirian. Mendingan gw di rumah dah. Hahaha.

Gw punya temen yg juga suka travel solo. Kata dia kalo pergi ama org lain malah males karena mesti tunggu tungguan hahaha.

Gw emang org nya paling gak bisa sendirian sih. Mau makan aja gak bisa sendirian hahaha.

    1. Wah iya kalo business trip ngga ada pilihan lain yaa Man.. Btw aku ngga sampe kayak temen kamu sihh sampe males pergi sama org laen hehehe kayaknya setaun 1x jalan sendiri cukupp.. Sisanya ya pengen jg sama temen2 😀

  12. Aku cinta travelling solo. Gak harus kompromi, tunggu2an, pokoknya wherever my feet takes me. Di Indonesia gak selalu lebih murah kan? Di jawa aja jalan2 sendirinya gak? Kota2 besar Indonesia yg belum pernah? Aku pengen ke Makassar…

    1. Iyaa sihh kalau ke Indonesia timur mahal.. Pdhl itu yg pengen aku samperin sebenernya. Ke timor, sumbawa, kei, ora, sampe raja ampat.. Waahhh panjang deh listnya.

  13. Aku suka solo travelling juga mba! Lebih bebas dan enak buat napa-napain. Kalau teman mau ikut max hanya 2-3 orang (sudah termasuk aku).
    Wakatobi or Kanawa? 😀

    1. Ohh kamu pun kalau traveling sama temen ngga suka banyak2 yah.. Iya sih kadang2 kalau rame jdnya ribet tapi padahal seru jg heheh. Mahaaal Wien.. Kayaknya kalo kesana budgetnua harus sedikit ekstra yah?

      1. Iya engga suka mba karena ribey. Ribet ngurusin jadwalnya, ribet dengan kemauan orang yang berbeda-beda, belum lagi kalau mendadak ngambek tanpa sebab. Haha.. Haha..

      2. Duhhh paling gaenak ya kalo lg jalan2 terus ada yg ngambekk.. Untungg aku ga pernah kejadian gitu hehehe. Mari kita nabung ke Indonesia timur! 😀

  14. Waktu itu mo jalan2 sndiri Chris.. Cuma ga jadi, krn waktu ijin sama bokap ditanya “emang berani tidur sendiri?” Langsung batal seketika…wkwkwkw

    1. hahaha aku kalo jalan2 sendiri biasanya nginep di backpackers hostel Py jadi tidur tetep rame2.. :p sekalian hemat juga sih. Kalau lagi nginep di kamar hotel sendirian aku nyalain tv semalemann hahaha

  15. I would love to travel solo too. I enjoyed it, like you have the liberty to do anything and no companion can stop you. 🙂 Lol! Have you been to Philippines, visiting it would be nice too, if you haven’t yet. 🙂

      1. I strongly recommend provinces like Palawan and Batanes instead. However, if city is really your preference, I recommend Cebu City! 🙂 I haven’t been to Cebu yet but foreigners love to go there, they said it’s pretty.
