Earlier this month I went to Java Jazz Festival , mainly to see India Arie and Allen Stone. But, a local artist’s performance really got my attention. It was Teza Sumendra’s.
I haven’t heard much of Teza before, except the fact that he used to be in Indonesian Idol. But let me tell you this – his voice is just amazingly beautiful and I’m not exaggerating. Plus – he does cover songs of Rnb/Soul singers which are my favorite music genre. Yay! Well I can’t say much about his singing technique since I’m no singing expert, but just have a listen to his covers on Youtube and Soundcloud so you can agree with me! 😉
Anyway.. for March’s #thismonthsmusic, here are his top 5 cover songs. Enjoy!
This book – written by Kevin Kwan, was recommended to me by my friend, Rio and it has been sitting in my e-book reader for months before I finally started to read it. When I finally started to read it, I was not too interested on it – I spent some time only reading few pages daily. But as I turned more pages, I got more and more hooked to this book.
Like the title, it tells the story about “Crazy Rich Asians” – Chinese people with generations of wealth currently living outside mainland China. The story revolves around a young Chinese couple who lives in New York, Rachel Chu and Nicholas Young and their travel to Nicholas’ hometown in Singapore to attend Nicholas’ best friend’s wedding.
Rachel – coming from a middle class immigrant family, did not realise that the Youngs are very rich and extravagant. Nicholas’ cousins, extended family and relatives are the the kind of people you would see in high – end lifestyle magazines. Nicholas’ family house looks like a castle filled with luxury items which Rachel has never seen before. The private jets, luxury cars, social evenings and fancy dinners make Rachel feel overwhelmed. Plus, she thinks that Nicholas did not prepare her for anything of those at all, thus makes her shocked and confused.
Nicholas – educated and worked in the West, thinks that all those wealth are his family’s, therefore not important to him. He simply thought the trip would be just an ordinary trip with the woman that he loves. What he missed to prepare is how to handle the way his family – especially his mum, reacts to him bringing home a girlfriend.
How do you think his family reacts?
What happens to Rachel & Nicholas’ relationship during their trip to Singapore?
Read the book to find out… 😉
It is indeed very entertaining, witty, and enjoyable to read!
One day after work, me and Dhisty went out to find something to eat. At first we wanted to eat around Senopati area, but then I realised that there’s this bubur ayam place that I wanted to try for so long, called Bubur Ayam Madurasa, and they only open on weekdays. Bubur ayam is one of my comfort foods. It is a very common food in Indonesia, in fact we Indonesians usually eat it for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner!
I first heard about this place from Twitter – their account showed up in my timeline. I have to admit, they put really nice picture of bubur ayam on their profile. So Tempting! I’ve been wanting to try it, but I haven’t really got the chance until that night. They are located in Alpus area – where the food stalls are, near the famous Roti Bakar Eddy. There were not many people when we got there, so we could easily get a spot.
We did not have to wait so long to get our bubur served. Trust me, they are SUPER DELICIOUS! Generous topping and perfect texture of the porridge. No doubt – best hawker style bubur ayam in town! (That’s why I’m writing this review.. to tell you about it :D)
So, if you happen to live or work near Jakarta Selatan / Jakarta Pusat area – you definitely should try this bubur ayam. I read on their menu board that they cater deliveries too. Worth to try! 🙂
Today I went to Kemang for lunch with my mum and little brother. Jakarta Food Truck was our first destination because lately I’ve been hearing a lot of reviews on this rather new food joint, located in Jl.Benda Raya, Kemang area. From what I’ve heard, they only open on weekends from around 10 – late night, so I thought it’s a good idea to have lunch there. But, when we reached there at 1.30PM, the place was so packed! My brother insisted to have lunch there, which was immediately followed by a big no from me and mum, we wanted a laid back lunch, not the one where we had to queue or even stand when eating. So I suggested to eat somewhere else, and go there later on for dessert… and that’s we did! We went back there again at around 3.30 PM.
When we got there the second time, the place was rather empty. Some people were there, but there were no queue at all. I heard that their specialties are their Ribs, Sloppy Joe, and Oreo Fritters, and we wanted to try them. BUT.. all of them were sold out! Boohoo. We tried to order other kinds of food but they were mostly sold out too.. and among the left overs, we ended up ordering Fries and Bangers, and Red Velvet Pancake.
Their menu described Fries and Bangers as “Sausage, Onions, and Fries”. That simple. The price was IDR 30K, which is acceptable for something as simple as that. I thought the food was going to be plain, just a mix of all those ingredients, stir fried. But to my surprise, it comes with some sort of house special sauce, it looks like brown sauce but it has a decent pepper taste, perfect to my liking. I could imagine eating a lot of food with that kind of sauce. YUMMMM~
Now their Red Velvet Pancake is another story. I was hoping to get an American style pancake (you know, blood red), with maybe, just maybe, some cheese dip? or cheese sauce? But then what served to me was those tiny rounds of PINKISH pancakes, with drops of PINK sauce and some powdered sugar. Definitely NOT what I expected, and tasted nothing like Red Velvet at all… hiks. To be completely fair, the taste of that pancake is not that bad, only it does not resembles Red Velvet at all. For something worth IDR 15K, it would have been better if it’s called PINK Pancake, or Pink lover pancake, or whatever pinky.
Anywayy… The place is a must visit, just because it gives you a different eating experience (not everyday Jakarta has an American style food truck.. right?), I regret not having the chance to taste their famous menu, so I’m going back there again to try their Oreo Fritters and Ribs.
Last year, a friend of mine introduced me to a track from Clean Bandit. They’re a British group, which according to their Wikipedia, falls under Deep House and Baroque Pop genre. While I don’t care much about genres and such (to me anything suits my ears do!), I fell in love with them instantly after hearing Dust Clears.
Here’s why :
1. The tune.
It has a very catchy, cheery tune, with a lot of unique sounds – a good combination of bass, some sort of piano, and violin too! Basically the kind of tune that will make you move your head left and right, hahaha.
With such cheery tune, you would expect to hear meaningless, repetitive lyrics – just like most top 40 songs nowadays. But no, Dust Clears actually has a very deep lyrics (at least to me!). It started with “Imagine if the life that you thought you shared wasn’t really there … ” and also this bit (!!) “Imagine if the friend that you thought you knew wasn’t really true … ” Those kind of lyrics, especially when listened near your period time can really make you have deep thinking, right? :O
Anyway, lately I came across their new single, “Rather Be” feat Jess Glyne. Another instant favorite! Have a listen first :
Don’t you agree that this one’s another hit? It was all over UK radio stations last month. Pretty sure that it’s big in clubs there, too… hahaha. Again, it has a marvelous combination of catchy tune and sweet lyrics. Who can resist this : “It’s easy being with you, sacred simplicity. As long as we’re together, there’s no place I rather be… “
So yeah, I’m currently listening to Clean Bandit, a lot! I think you should too 🙂
As far as I can remember, music has been a major part of my life. Growing up, I used to listen to the radio and made mixtapes (with an actual cassette!) to be played over and over. I have been a fan of (in historical order – as I remember it) boy bands, girl bands, Eminem (!), Brit pop, RnB, Alternative Rock, Jazz, and of course, the various kinds of Indie. My interest towards music made me joined student radio twice, once in UI as Music Director of RTC UI FM, then in Bournemouth as Radio DJ and Producer of Radio PPI Dunia. I LOVED my radio days! Those days of exploring different kinds of music and having similar minded friends…. they were one of the highlights of my university days!
Okay okay now moving on.. after I started working I don’t really have the time to explore music anymore. SAD, i know. Since it’s still the beginning of the year, I’m going to start a #thismonthsmusic project. The rule is simple, each month I’ll share minimum 5 different tunes / albums / artists that I’m currently listening. Doesn’t have to be new discovery, anything goes.Easy breezy… right? :p So let’s start! 🙂
1. Young the Giant – Mind Over Matter
Note : super excited for their new album – coming soon this year!!!
2. Lupe Fiasco ft Ed Sheeran – Old School Love
3. Panama – Always
4. Wild Cub – Thunder Clatter
5. Dent May – Born Too Late
6. Ariana Grande ft Nathan Skyes – Almost is Never Enough
Note : I love Ariana Grande! finally a top 40 female singer who really can sing and does not have a single with cheesy disco tune and repeatable meaningless lyric!
