An Afternoon in Bandung

The date was December 24th – Christmas Eve. I woke up early, and rushed to catch a bus to Bandung that was scheduled to leave at 6 AM. I managed to get to the station on time and jumped into the bus. Not long after the bus departed, I fell asleep but only to woke up again not long after due to the uncomfortable seat. Repeat for about 10 times until I finally made it to Bandung.

24 hours in Bandung

Last weekend me and my friends went to Bandung. There were four of us and we’ve known each other since we joined the same company back in 2011. Though now two of us don’t work there anymore (including myself!), we remain close friends and occasionally travel together. This trip was special because it’s the last trip before one of us left to Melbourne to study. So it’s like a farewell trip too :’).

Miss Bee Providore

Located in Ciumbuleuit area up north of Bandung, Miss Bee Providore offers you a homey and spacious place to dine. To me, this is one of the few places I’ve been that suits every dine out occasion that I can think of! Breakfast with family? I did that. Date with your significant other? of course, sit in the outdoor terrace area (facing the garden) and embrace Bandung’s cosy wind. Gathering with friends and family? sit in the indoor area. Don’t worry, it has a children’s playground as well!

I won’t say much about this place, the pictures below say it all. Enjoy! 🙂

Their indoor sitting area is also very nice, and they also have a small shop which sells cute stuffs (including the famous Kou Cuisine’s Jam from Bali!).

Now let’s talk about the food. Since we came there early in the morning (7 AM to be exact.. we were the first customer that day!), they only served breakfast menu.

Breakfast Menu

We ordered different kinds of food – mine was Full English Breakfast. Everything was delicious! I love what I ordered, especially the fact that they don’t use canned baked beans and cooked their own. If you prefer sweet breakfast, try their pancakes! it’s soooo fluffy and buttery. Yummm.

That’s about it! do visit when you’re in Bandung. I heard that the restaurant is often full, so if you planned to have breakfast there, I would suggest to come as early as 7AM so you you can still enjoy the atmosphere before the restaurant gets crowded 🙂

Perky Pedro – Comidas Y Bebidas

Until recently, Mexican food were not easy to find in Jakarta. Of course there’s Amigos – but it’s a bit pricey and has limited outlet. Nowadays, the situation has changed. You can find Mexican food almost everywhere, especially in food trucks around city centres of Jakarta. But, not all of them are good – I have to say that some of them are just joining the bandwagon, perhaps without understanding the idea of mexican food. Though Mexican food are not my favorite kind of food – I occasionally crave for burrito or quesadilla and got frustrated when one of the food trucks who claim to sell mexican food gave me beef quesadilla with shredded beef and cheese spread rather than diced beef and shredded cheese (!!!).

So, when I got the chance to try a newly opened Mexican food restaurant during my last visit to Bandung, I did not have high expectation towards it. Located in Jalan R.E. Martadinata (Riau) No. 128A, it is easily to find as it has a catchy neon signboard.

Perky Pedro!

When entering the restaurant, me and my family were greeted by the friendly waiter who directed us to our seats. Though they have both indoor and outdoor sitting area, we chose indoor sitting area. After we were seated and given the menu. The menu selection looks impressive. Jalapenos, Burrito, Quesadilla.. they have all the basic mexican food. And that’s about it. The don’t fall into nowadays hip restaurant trap where you have to serve dessert to be able to “fit in” neither do they serve nasi goreng to be able to fit into most Indonesians’ taste buds. One plus point for staying true to mexican food only. Before I start to talk about the food, have a look at these pictures of the restaurant’s ambiance…

Now, do you agree with me if I gave it a second plus point for the ambiance and design? The restaurant has a quirky + vibrant design. It may not be the kind of restaurant for family gathering, but feel free to bring your parents or children there (note that they serve alcohol), to my observation, the indoor area is non-smoker friendly.

Okay, let’s talk about the food now. The four of us ordered different kinds of food. For starters, we ordered Jalapeno Poppers (IDR 27.000). This is surely not for me, as it’s very spicy. My mum could not handle it, I didn’t even want to try.. but my brother loved it!

Next, the main course. We ordered Beef burritos (IDR 47.500), Beef quesadilla (IDR 32.000), and Ox tongue taco (IDR 48.000). All three dishes taste soooo goood! They are rich of flavor and has generous fillings. My brother even said that the burritos were the best he had ever tasted. Each dish came with cream cheese, guacamole, and salsa sauce, also tortilla chips. Yummm! Third plus point for the food.

Although I came here with minimal expectation, I left Perky Pedro with satisfied tummy. Not to forget, it’s friendly for the wallet too – we spent less than IDR 400.000 for four persons.. so it’s less than IDR 100.000 per person. Not too sure about in Bandung – but in Jakarta, it is hard to go to a restaurant, eat good food, enjoy a nice ambiance, and pay less than IDR 100.000 per person. So for me, it’s another plus point! Definitely a must try if you are in Bandung and would love to try something different.

Halo halo Bandung!

Hello! How’s your weekend?

I spent my weekend in Bandung with family. Though Bandung is a popular weekend destination for Jakartans, it has been two years since my last visit! That’s why I was very much excited to go.The main reason to visit Bandung was to attend my brother’s event. He’s a final year student at ITB’s art faculty and the event – a Japan fair which was held on Sunday – showcased his design.

Of course while we’re in town we did not forget to enjoy Bandung’s two obvious “attractions” i.e food and shopping. Hehehe. Despite having little time there, we were able to eat a lot! Hahaha.

Our first stop was Warung Lela. Located up north of Bandung, I think the homey restaurant serves the best Mie Ayam/Yamin. Going to this restaurant brings me memories from my high school and early college days as I always ate there whenever I visited Bandung with my friends, back in the days. Afterwards, we visited Rumah Mode, a famous factory outlet store in Setiabudi area. Lucky us, unlike usual, it’s not too crowded. Mum enjoyed her reflexology massage while me, my brother, and my cousin enjoyed a little bit of shopping spree 😉 If you happen to visit Rumah Mode, don’t forget to try Rumah Tahu, a snack vendor located in its food court which sells the best Tahu Mendoan!

Like I said before, Bandung has become a very popular weekend destination. Hotels are mushrooming in town, from budget ones until those with luxury. This makes finding a hotel in Bandung an easy task, especially when you’re searching for it online. But… I would suggest to avoid North Bandung area, especially around Jalan Dago, Cihampelas, or Setiabudi. The traffic there can get frustrating on weekends! Of course Bandung is not a big town so even though there’s traffic, it wouldn’t get as bad as Jakarta. But still, for me personally, I left Jakarta on the weekend to avoid traffic, so that’s the very least thing I would like to experience while in Bandung.

Our choice of hotel last weekend was Hotel California Bandung. Despite its rather-funny name, it met my expectation very well. We stayed in their Suite room for IDR.900.000 a night which accommodated the four of us conveniently. We got complimentary breakfast for two person, and the amenities in the room worked well. Perhaps there are many cheaper options since we only spent very little hours in the room (read: only came there to sleep and shower, left early the next morning), but I love the fact that the hotel is located in Jl.Wastukencana, which is still close to jl.Dago but not as crowded.

After we checked in to the hotel, we went out again to have afternoon tea, which followed by dinner. First, we went to Oza Tea House in Jl. Diponegoro.

Oza Tea House
Oza Tea House

This, ladies and gentlemen, is heaven for you tea lovers (like my mum)! Really, she was in awe the whole time we were there. They sell serious tea as in they really know the tea business.. not just selling ordinary “ice lemon tea” or “green tea with something something”.

Oza Tea House
Exquisite Tea Selection!

Unlike my mum, I’m not that much of a tea fan but I have to admit their tea is good stuff. Here’s what I ordered.. genmaicha tea with strawberry.

My order : Genmaicha with Strawberry

It has a unique blend of green tea taste, sweetness (from the sugar), and sour (from the strawberry). Overall, if you want to chill while enjoying high quality tea, this is the place!

For dinner, my brother recommended  Perky Pedro in Jalan Riau, so we went there. What is it? I’ll write a separate post on it!

After dinner, we went for coffee at Two Cents at Jalan Cimanuk, not far from Jalan Riau. The place does not only offer coffee but also a selection of delicious desserts and food.

Scrumptious desserts and lite bites..

I ordered raspberry + White chocolate eclair, croissant bread butter pudding (both are very yummy but I forgot to take a picture), and… Bacon Piccolo Latte. Yep, you read it right! At first I was very much hesitant to order it, but then I remembered, life’s too short and I’m on holiday, so I did it! I ordered it.

Two Cents Brew Believer
Bacon Piccolo Latte (!!!)

It turns out to be very good! It’s basically a latte + a strip of beef bacon. The saltiness of bacon compliments the bitter taste of latte. Though it’s not gonna be my favorite kind of coffee, but I would surely order it again.

The next day, we started our day by having breakfast at Miss Bee Providore at Jl. Rancabentang, in Ciumbuleuit area. It was love at first sight. I love everything that is about this place, and I’m going to write about it in a separate post as well.

After breakfast, we went to my brother’s event, stayed there for a while and bought last minute snacks at Kartika Sari & Bawean before going home to Jakarta… It was a short visit, but I’m happy to be able to spend time with my family, it’s been a while since our last weekend getaway 🙂
