Around this time last year I posted this post in which I shared a list of newly released music that I was excited about. Well lately I’ve been discovering a lot of new releases from my favorite artists as well and it got me thinking, perhaps May is the time to release new music?
Justin Bieber is back, and at first I did not care. I have to admit some of previous his songs are super catchy and very Karaoke-genic (Baby, anyone?), but none actually made me want to purchase his albums or even his singles.
His first single from the album Purpose, which is titled “Where are U now” is a collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo. It’s catchy, sounds very 2015 and of course, seems like it’s going to be a big hit. But I don’t like it. Then came another single, “What do you mean”. Still catchy, but not for me… I can’t relate to and I hate the repetitive lyrics! But then again, the song is so 2015, don’t you agree? almost every songs in today’s radio are like that.
Anyway recently I found that my friends on Path posted several new tracks from Bieber. Oh, so there are other songs from the album… I thought. I gave “Sorry” a try and found myself surprised! Is it just me, or does it has similar sounds like little bit like Friendly Fires’ Pala album? Yes? no?
After “Sorry”, I came across “Love Yourself” or Track 5 on the album. It was an instant love, and I have no shame in saying this out loud. The song is so chill yet groovy – is such genre exist? it is definitely the kind of song you can hear in a beach club, chillin’ with your drink. #noshame.
With the instant love, I decided to borrow *yes, borrow, not yet purchased* my colleague’s digital album and have been hearing it… all day at work today. again, #noshame.
So what do I think about the album?
Well to me it has some great tunes.. different from previous Bieber’s songs that I was aware of. Since his main target market is teenagers, there are still a lot of teen sounds and tunes like “No Pressure”, “No Sense”.. which sounds very today, with very simple and repetitive lyrics. Then there’s also some teen disco like “Children” and “Where are U now”. And of course, what is teenager life without some ballad, found in “Life is Worth Living” and “Purpose”.
But, the album also have some cool songs like “Get Used to Me”, “Company”, and “Been You” – which has some vintage disco tunes.. the ones that I can totally dance to! Last but not least.. it has a collaboration with Nas called “we are”. Since Nas previously collaborated with Jermaine Dupri, 2Pac, and Dr.Dre.. his collaboration with Bieber now must really mean something.
Will I buy the album? Yes!
Am I a belieber now? Haha not really.. but Justin, you really got me this time 😉
Though being a self-proclaimed avid music enthusiast, I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of Indonesian Music mainstream scene. Sorry, but to me most Indonesian mainstream music comprise of the same thing ; cheesy-meaningless lyric, repeatable beats thus making it hard for me to find a likable artist these days.
Of course, the case was much different back in the days. I used to (and still are) a very big fan of Sheila on 7, Dewa 19, Gigi, Kahitna, and the likes. But these days.. I can’t really think of any. I like RAN, Maliq n D’essentials, SORE, Mocca, and others.. but are they mainstream? I think they are still considered as Indie music, no?
So I am very surprised and excited when I found out about Rinni Wulandari. She is an Indonesian Idol alumni which I just heard about. This is her latest single :
Please have a listen and tell me, if you did not know her before.. would you think the song was sung by an Indonesian artist? When I first heard of it, I thought it’s either Ashanti or Ariana Grande. Really! It somehow even reminds me of Mariah Carey back in the days.
Though the video clip is not the best that is out there and pop-RnB is not really my favorite kind of music, but I have to say, that I’m really proud, hopefully this song can go as mainstream as it can be and get worldwide recognition. It’s not that award winning, I agree… but still, a very good start for Indonesian mainstream artists. Finally, something different! 🙂
Update 05/11 – @DionMahenra mentioned me on Twitter and told me that there’s a new video for this single, also that this single has been featured in Hot Hits UK Week Commencing 27 October, together with Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj to name a few! Bravo!! watch the video here :
I’m currently obsessed with Shy Girls – a Portland based band. Their first EP, “Timeshare” was actually out on 2013 but I just discovered them very recently. I’m no expert in classifying music genres, but from what I’ve read, they are classified as RnB-Soul-Smooth Jazz. Some are referring them to Sade, Prince, and The Weeknd… and I actually agree with the latter, plus I also think that their sounds kind of remind me of good old 90s slowjams tunes. Anyway, I think their music is perfect for lazy Sunday days, the ones you like to spend just chilling in your room. I’m actually listening to their Soundcloud as I write this so I guess it’s a nice companion for writing as well.
Here’s my favorite track of “Timeshare” EP – you can purchase them on iTunes.
And.. I also found out that they’re doing a rendition of Brandy’s Sittin Up in My Room, which I think is quite sexy 😉
Last month I bought myself a new iPod nano, 16 gb (YAY!). The last time I had an iPod was back in 2009 before my good ol’ iPod classic (80 gb) decided to die on me. Ever since I only listened to music from my phone and online radio… while saving up to buy a new iPod.
I wanted to buy iPod classic due to its capacity but when I think of it again… the size makes it not easy to bring anywhere. I think I’m gonna buy one when I have my own place, and will just put it in an iPod dock and let it play good music all day long 🙂
Anyway, I decided to buy iPod nano instead (enough capacity, perfect size – easy to bring anywhere), and now that I’ve bought it.. I’ve been spending a lot of my free time browsing and listening to music.. and then choosing the songs that I’m going to put into this iPod.
And now.. Here are some songs and albums that I’m currently listening to :
Ed Sheeran – One (From the album “X”)
Ed Sheeran is back! this is indeed a sad but beautiful song..
Sam Smith – Lay Me Down (From the album “In the Lonely Hour”)
Many have said that he’s male Adele as he’s also British. I kinda agree.. his songs are somewhat similar to Adele’s but.. I still can’t help to fall for his voice. Very enjoyable song, and album!
Gabrielle Aplin – Home (from the album “English Rain”)
Another British singer I currently love..
Okay.. now it’s time for more upbeat songs :
RAC – Cheap Sunglasses feat Matthew Koma (from the album “Strangers”)
They are coming to Jakarta! wooot! Sunday, August 24. Cant wait!
MO – Don’t Wanna Dance (from the album “No Mythologies To Follow”)
With its catchy beat, this song has been my current mood booster!
What do you think of these songs? Do check them out and hope you’ll love it as much as I am! 🙂
Earlier this month I went to Java Jazz Festival , mainly to see India Arie and Allen Stone. But, a local artist’s performance really got my attention. It was Teza Sumendra’s.
I haven’t heard much of Teza before, except the fact that he used to be in Indonesian Idol. But let me tell you this – his voice is just amazingly beautiful and I’m not exaggerating. Plus – he does cover songs of Rnb/Soul singers which are my favorite music genre. Yay! Well I can’t say much about his singing technique since I’m no singing expert, but just have a listen to his covers on Youtube and Soundcloud so you can agree with me! 😉
Anyway.. for March’s #thismonthsmusic, here are his top 5 cover songs. Enjoy!
Pretty Wings by Maxwell
I Need by TGT
Strip by Chris Brown
Rocket by Beyonce
Girls Love Beyonce by Drake
And here’s a snapshot of his performance of Java Jazz , where he sang one of my favorite song – Musiq’s Just Friends 🙂
